HTA AWARDS $600,000 TO ORGANIZATIONS
THAT PERPETUATE HAWAIIAN CULTURE

The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority (HTA), the state agency for tourism, with guidance from the Hawaiian Cultural Program Advisory Council (HCPAC), has selected 27 programs to receive funding through its Kūkulu Ola – Living Hawaiian Culture Program (LHCP) in 2010 (see attached for a list of the awardees).

“The Hawaiian culture is an integral part of our islands’ identity that sets us apart as a special and unique visitor destination,” said Mike McCartney, HTA’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “HTA remains committed to supporting programs that respects, perpetuates and preserves the Hawaiian culture for both visitors and residents.”

The Hawai’i Capital Cultural Coalition (HCCC) gratefully announces funding from The Hawai’i Tourism Authority and Kamehameha Schools. The HCCC has been awarded a $20,000 contract through the Hawai’i Tourism Authority’s 2010 Kūkulu Ola – Living Hawaiian Culture Program in support of the coalition’s Hawai’i Capital National Heritage Establishment project. The HCCC has also received a $3,000 donation from Kamehameha Schools for general operating support.

A National Heritage Area is a grass roots community partnership that involves collaboration to carry out existing or new programs by non-profits and other community organizations that nurture and celebrate the unique cultural heritage of an area. The purpose of a NHA is helping people share their stories.

Honolulu parcel in running for federal heritage designation
Congress’ approval could mean funds for Kaka’ako to Nu’uanu

A chunk of urban Honolulu — from Downtown to Palama and up to Nu’uanu — could be named a National Heritage Area as early as August. The heritage area designation would make organizations and businesses in the Capital Cultural District eligible for millions of dollars in federal and other funds to encourage cultural tourism, improve experiences for visitors and residents and beef up educational opportunities designed to teach people about the area’s history …more

On January 30th, Senator Daniel Inouye introduced legislation in the U.S. Congress to designate the Hawai‘i Capital National Heritage Area for the Honolulu/Kapalama ahupua‘a which covers Kakak‘ako, Downtown, Nuuanu and Kapalama. The bill (S.359) was co-sponsored by Senator Daniel Akaka.

Thursday, February 19th, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at the entrance of Ali‘iolani Hale (by the King Kamehameha Statue), there will be a ceremony to announce this exciting initiative. Over fifty leaders from arts and cultural organizations and institutions, businesses, city and state government, and other interested individuals gathered to celebrate Hawai‘i Capital Cultural Coalition’s (HCCC) completion of the partners’ National Heritage Area Feasibility Study. The announcement took place in the heart of the proposed Hawai‘i Capital National Heritage Area at Hawai‘i’s oldest residence, Washington Place, home to Queen Lili‘uokalani. The long-awaited publication is an integral step in the application process to become designated as a National Heritage Area by the U.S. Congress. Honolulu awaits 'heritage area' status

Heritage Area Organizations and businesses on a swath of land from Kalihi to Kaka’ako would be eligible for millions in federal and private grants for property improvements if a special federal “heritage area” designation is approved.

The grants could be used for everything from brochures on the history of a property to major renovations on historic buildings.

The “heritage area” designation, which must be approved by Congress, would be one of 37 in the nation and only the third in the West. …more
